Get your real Delaware total — no sales tax, but a 5.25% Document Fee that increased just months ago and works exactly like one.

Delaware's “Document Fee” Just Got More Expensive

Delaware has no general sales tax, and that includes vehicle purchases — but the state charges a Document Fee of 5.25% on the purchase price (or NADA value, whichever is higher) that functions identically to a sales tax in every practical sense. Effective October 1, 2025, this rate rose from 4.25% to 5.25%, a meaningful increase if you're working from older estimates.

The Document Fee is calculated on (purchase price minus trade-in value) × 0.0525. For lower-priced vehicles, Delaware sets minimum fee floors: $8 minimum if the taxable base is $399 or below, $13.75 minimum for $400-$500, and the standard 5.25% calculation with no floor above $500.

Separately, Delaware dealers can also charge an uncapped “processing fee” on top of the government Document Fee — averaging around $475. A 2024 bill (HB295) proposed capping this dealer fee at $475 with mandatory disclosure requirements, but it did not pass before the legislative session ended, so it remains uncapped today.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Delaware charge sales tax on vehicles?
No. Delaware has no general sales tax, but charges a 5.25% Document Fee instead (raised from 4.25% on October 1, 2025), which functions the same way in practice.
Why did Delaware's vehicle tax go up recently?
The Document Fee rate increased from 4.25% to 5.25% effective October 1, 2025. If you're using an older estimate, expect a noticeably higher number now.
Is there a cap on Delaware dealer fees?
The 5.25% Document Fee has no cap by design (it's percentage-based). The separate dealer 'processing fee' also has no statutory cap — a 2024 bill to cap it at $475 did not pass. The average processing fee is around $475.
Does Delaware's Document Fee apply to trade-ins?
Yes. The fee is calculated on the purchase price minus your trade-in value, so trading in a vehicle genuinely lowers what you owe.
How much is Delaware vehicle registration?
$40 per year, or $200 for a 5-year term — most buyers choose the 5-year option to avoid annual renewals. Title fee is $35.
