Indiana's Flat 7% Tax — and a Doc Fee That's Actually Capped
Indiana charges a flat 7% sales tax on vehicle purchases statewide, with no city or county add-on. A $35,000 car owes exactly $2,450 in sales tax no matter where in Indiana you buy it — one of the more predictable states to budget for at the point of sale.
Indiana is also one of the minority of states that caps dealer documentation fees by law: the cap sits at $251, CPI-indexed and effective as of July 2025. That's a meaningful consumer protection compared to neighboring states like Ohio or Kentucky, where doc fees are uncapped.
What Indiana doesn't cap, and what a lot of buyers don't budget for, is the annual county vehicle excise tax and wheel tax you'll pay every year at renewal — separate from the one-time sales tax at purchase. The excise tax is value-based, and county wheel tax is capped at $50 but applies in many counties and municipalities on top of it.

| Dealer Doc Fee | Capped at $251 | CPI-indexed, effective July 2025 |
The Annual Cost Most Buyers Miss: Excise Tax & Wheel Tax
Every Indiana vehicle owner pays an annual county vehicle excise tax at renewal, calculated as either a flat rate or based on the vehicle's value and age — this is separate from, and in addition to, the one-time 7% sales tax paid at purchase.
On top of that, customers in certain counties and municipalities also owe a wheel tax. If your combined county excise and wheel tax exceeds $50, only $50 is charged — that's the maximum allowed for the county portion, though city-level add-ons can still apply beyond it.
Because this cost recurs every year and isn't part of the out-the-door price at signing, it's easy to underestimate Indiana's true annual cost of ownership if you only look at the purchase-time total.
